Category: Theater/Shows/Concerts

Start: Mar 21, 2018 7:30 PM

End: Mar 21, 2018 8:30 PM

Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA

On Wednesday, March 21, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will present “Music of the City,” the 12th installment of Musical Louisiana: America’s Cultural Heritage. The popular series examines different aspects of the state’s contributions to classical music with a free concert in St. Louis Cathedral, as well as award-winning educational programming.

Selections for the 2018 concert celebrate the diverse influences that compose the city’s extensive musical legacy. Over the centuries, waves of newcomers—French, Spanish, African, Irish, German, Italian, West Indian, English, Latin American, Anglo-American, Chinese, Vietnamese, and more—have joined their musical traditions with those of Louisiana’s indigenous populations to create a unique symphony of sound.

Carlos Miguel Prieto will conduct, and former WDSU anchor Norman Robinson will serve as narrator. Guest performers include clarinetist Doreen Ketchens, organist and pianist Davide Mariano and soprano Dara Rahming.

This project is sponsored in part by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Foundation and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. A live video stream of the concert will be available on LPOmusic.com, and WWNO will broadcast the concert live on 89.9 FM and Classical 104.9 FM in the New Orleans area, on KTLN 90.5 FM in the Houma-Thibodeaux area and on www.wwno.org.
